The Truth About “Premium” Beef Labels — and What They Really Mean

The Truth About “Premium” Beef Labels

Consumers today are more thoughtful about what they eat, and beef is no exception. Names like Aberdeen Angus and Wagyu are often held up as the gold standard. But the reality behind those labels isn’t always what you’d expect.

At Cloverfields, we believe in being upfront. Too often, people pay extra for beef that doesn’t truly live up to the reputation.

Spot Aberdeen Angus in the supermarket and you might assume you’re buying pedigree beef. The same with Wagyu, famous for rich marbling and flavour. But here’s the truth: much of what’s sold under these names isn’t the real thing.

In the case of Aberdeen Angus, many supermarkets cross dairy cows with Angus bulls through artificial insemination. The result is a half-bred animal. It may look similar, but it rarely delivers the flavour, texture or marbling of a true pedigree Angus.

The same happens with Wagyu. Once a byword for luxury, it has been borrowed by fast food chains selling “Wagyu-style” burgers. Most of this beef comes from crossbreeds, lacking the distinctive marbling and depth of authentic Wagyu.

These shortcuts matter. Labels like Angus and Wagyu earned their reputations through careful breeding, rearing and feeding. When those standards are diluted, the names lose meaning. Independent butchers and quality restaurants still respect the breeds, but in supermarkets and fast food chains the terms are often used as little more than marketing.

At Cloverfields, we do things differently. Our beef comes from a purebred herd of pedigree Aberdeen Angus, raised on 100% clover-rich pastures in Breconshire, Wales. No shortcuts. No marketing tricks. Just cattle given the time to graze naturally and beef matured for 28 days to bring out tenderness and flavour.

Our cattle are clover-fed, producing beef with natural richness and texture. They are pedigree Aberdeen Angus, delivering consistency and marbling. Our farming is sustainable, respecting the land as well as the herd. And above all, we are transparent: what we say is what you get.

Today’s customer wants more than a label. They want to know the story: where the beef comes from, how it is raised, and why it tastes different. At Cloverfields, we welcome that. Every cut tells the truth about what’s on the plate: pedigree Aberdeen Angus, clover-fed, matured for 28 days.

Don’t settle for buzzwords. Taste the real thing.
